Ok, it's plotless, but the sailing scenes are quite spectacular.

A must see.

Reviews from Leonard S. Reich

Leonard Reich was kind enough to send me some reviews he produced as part of preparing for a course he gave at Colby in 1995. It may be too late to apply, so you can catch his 1996 course or his 1997 course or ...

"Around Alone"
"Around Alone" is about Dodge Morgan's record-breaking single-handed circumnavigation in 1986. Lots of on-board "footage." Excellent. 58 mins. $29.95 from The New Film Co. 617-641-2580 or 800-462-2306

"American Challenge"
"American Challenge" is about the 1980 OSTAR race. The filmmaker put cameras aboard seven American boats. The whole thing is done supurbly. One of the very best sailing videos I have seen. Highly recommended. 58 mins. $29.95 from The New Film Co. (see above).

"The Whitbread Round the World Race, 1993-94"
"The Whitbread Round the World Race, 1993-94" is made up of ESPN materials narrated by Gray Jobson and Peter Montgomery. Nicely done, though I really preferred the earlier one, on the '89-90 race. (But it was twice as long and cost twice as much.) Recommended, if you like that sort of thing. 60 mins. $19.95. Available from The Armchair Sailor in Newport, RI (phone 800-29CHART), which has lots of videos as well as books.

"The Friendship Sloop,"
"The Friendship Sloop," 28 mins., shows both wooden and fiberglass boats under construction and in the water. This is a traditional gaff-rigged design developed on the Maine coast. Available from New Film Co. (as in the Morgan film "Around Alone," above).

I'm always open to adding resources to my list, so if you know of other items, give me a holler: mbrmbr@acm.org
